My jumper

Posted: 15-05-2008 09:39:34
The jumper I'm wearing today is made from a colorful conglomeration of four different sweat shirts. It was made by a friend of mine about four years ago and I haven't worn it in a long time.

Kissed by the sun

Posted: 12-05-2008 11:35:06
It may not look like I've been out in the sun all weekend (I'm still my usual pale complexion) but last night I felt sun kissed.

You know that feeling you get when you've spent a day outside in nice weather, well that's what I felt like last night whilst watching 'Temple of the Doom'. I'd purposely bought some chocolate biscuits to dunk in a cup of tea. It reminded me of being 7 again.

Seeing Shapes

Posted: 09-05-2008 11:54:06
No I'm not hallucinating. Tonight Jen and I are going to see Gavin 'Cherry' Filmer's band, Shapes.

I'm expecting "Frenetic, frenzied, furious, phallic-rock. Brash, discordant and angular jazz-punk. Tangential, obtuse, piercing, strident rock-experimentation for the seriously musically challenged mind"

Hot friction...

is causing my jeans to wear away.

Fun day at a BP garage

Posted: 06-05-2008 10:47:44
On Monday Jen and myself planned a day trip to Coughton Court a National Trust place just past Redditch.

For health and safety reasons I decided to stop off at a garage, fill the car with petrol, put some air in my tyres and fit a rear light bulb I have been meaning to replace for about four months.

To be efficient I sent Jen into pay for the petrol while I moved the car to the air pump. I first started filling my tyres with water instead of air realising pretty quickly as I drenched myself with water. Whilst doing this my glasses kept falling of my face.

I then moved to a parking spot so that I could fit the bulb. After a couple of attempts I realised the shop had provided me with the wrong bulb.

Ok so I put my glasses on and start driving off the forecourt double checking I had everything. We realise we hadn't got my debit card which Jen had used to purchase the petrol. I pull into another parking spot and and we look for the card. Jen insists she's given it me back. I get out the car to check my pockets and look in the back seats. I take my glasses off and put them on the roof while I look. No sign of the card so I run to the shop to see if Jen left it behind. I get half way and Jen shouts back to me. She's been sitting on it all along.

So back in the car, driving tape in the stereo and I'm ready for our journey. I pull of the garage forecourt and realise I can't see anything, at the same time I hear something fall of the roof of the car. Yes my glasses.

I park up and we spend 20 mins looking for my glasses but with no luck. We didn't get to Coughton Court in the end, instead Jen directed us home. I did manage to watch the snooker though, after pulling the sofa closer to the TV.

I know I'm sad

Posted: 02-05-2008 16:56:10
Saturday whilst Jen is at work I will mostly playing GTAIV and reading "Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman

On Sunday and the bank Holiday I think Jen and I are going for a drive somewhere nice.

But tonight I'm off to the pub with some of the cherry lads for a pint or two of HPA.

Have a great bank holiday weekend.

This song has been a favourite of mine for a few years since buying a 12" of it in a charity shop. I came across this performance today and it made me laugh.

Sunday Weirdness

Posted: 28-04-2008 17:39:09
As I waited at the lights outside The Plough on the Hagley Road I had a feeling that I was being watched. To begin with I resisted turning to look at the driver of a red 400 series Rover (just in case he/she wasn't looking at me and then thought I was looking at them) but eventually the urge to look was to strong.

Instantly my feelings were rendered correct. The driver of the Rover, a lady in her late 50's was staring at me. Her face was made into the shape one would make if they where blowing out candles. As she drove off I noticed she had two real life cats that were roaming around on the back seats, one of which was also staring at me.

Early mornings

Posted: 25-04-2008 13:17:05
I usually get up at 7:45am but this week my biological clock is firing up at 6am. This is not a bad thing as I get quite a bit of free time to read, make a nice breakfast and basically chill out before I leave for work at 9 o'clock.

I do hope these early morning awakenings continue as they are enjoyable.

Jen's birthday

Posted: 22-04-2008 17:28:32
Jen's birthday seems to be quite a concept this year. It's not a special birthday (she's 27). And it's not her birthday until Wednesday but already we have been out for two meals. She's acquired a few birthday cards (that are now on display in our lounge) and has also received her birthday present of me.

I think she's planned to go out on Thursday with her work colleagues and I'm sure somethings going on on Saturday. Talk about a birthday week.

Darts tonight

Posted: 16-04-2008 14:53:38
It's been a long time since we had a game of arrows. I'm looking forward to it.

Great Friday

Posted: 14-04-2008 12:37:52
Thanks to everyone who turned up on Friday to support Jon, Pete and myself at our last Death at the Disco. I have to say it was one of the best ones we've done, a fitting end you might say.

The death of Death at the Disco

Posted: 11-04-2008 15:43:31
Tonight is my last gig at Subway City. After five years of playing records to the kids of Birmingham Death at the Disco has decided to hang up the gloves.

Should be a fun night tonight many of my good mates are coming especially to see us off.

I expect to have a hang-over in the morning.

Whay Can't We Be Friends

Posted: 10-04-2008 10:04:23
As promised here's the new Trash Fashion video for the single Why Can't We Be Friends.

Directed by Trash Fashion and myself, shot in a day on a budget of £7 (miniDV tape and a box of Tetley tea bags)

Many thanks to clevercherry for the loan of the equipment.

A nice meal

Posted: 08-04-2008 10:54:32
Took Jen out to celebrate her getting a new job. We went to The Bank, hadn't been there in a while and it was nice to get some posh nosh.

I had Fish & Chips on Marks recommendation. It's not something I would usually go for at The Bank but I couldn't decide what else to have. It was very nice. Jen had a seafood risotto which was also lovely.

Egg custards

Posted: 04-04-2008 13:39:33
I like them a lot but one isn't enough I have to have at least two to be satisfied.

Jen and I are planning on going for a walk on Sunday. Hopefully take a picnic which will be nice.

Fish pie

Posted: 03-04-2008 11:10:04
Cooked fish pie for Jen last night. She has an interview today so I wanted her to have some home cooked comfort food. Fish is apparently brain food, not that Jen needs any brain enhancing though. Good luck Jen.

1 out of 2 aint bad

Posted: 31-03-2008 13:05:28
Saturday I tutored a friend of mine in the art of video editing. Went home and had tomato soup and a cheese sandwich (cut into four squares) and then went to bed.

On Sunday I managed spend the day doing practically nothing. Jen was at work and I couldn't be bothered to cook so I suggested we go for a carvery. That makes two carveries in a week

Don't forget to change your clocks on Sunday

Posted: 28-03-2008 12:04:19
Forward an hour.

Sorry my blogging hasn't been much cop over the last few weeks I've been very busy.

Finally finished

Posted: 26-03-2008 09:55:31
Easter Sunday has become a traditional Ridding and Dooner get together. This year Jen and I played host to the masses, cooking up a storm of flavours for the family.

I also managed to finish the video for my mates, Trash Fashion. They are very happy with it which makes me happy. I'll post a link to it at a later date when it's all been finalised.

More eggs for easter

Posted: 20-03-2008 16:04:04
Sue says it's OK to eat more than three eggs a week because the cholesterol they contain is good cholesterol. As it's Easter I think I'll be eating more eggs than usual.

Have a great Easter break everyone.

Wires

Posted: 17-03-2008 17:36:12
Wires are rubbish. I spent two hours arranging the wires behind my moms TV so that they are invisible from all angles of the room.

When is somebody going to invent electricity that travels through the air wirelessly.

I can't get enough oeufs

Posted: 13-03-2008 14:08:21
I love eggs at the moment. They're great but apparently you should only eat 3 a week as they are high in cholesterol. I ate three last night.

Thick hot hot chocolate

Posted: 11-03-2008 10:26:55
Forgot to mention, in Barcelona Jen and I had a speciality hot chocolate from a small quaint cafe that is famous for them.

It was nothing like our hot chocolate. You could stand your spoon in it it was that thick. It also had chilly in which added an extra twist. Very nice. It was particularly nice with an earl gray tea to wash it down.

Barcelona! Such a beautiful horizon

Posted: 10-03-2008 15:49:42
Jen and I had a great time in Barcelona. We ate lots of traditional Catalonian food, drank wine and walked for miles.

Jen had her purse stolen on the first day. The thieves only got away with 10 euros. We managed to cancel the cards straight away and then forgot about it and continued having a great time.

My last blog this week

Posted: 05-03-2008 14:43:01
I'm off to Barcelona for a short break. Both Jen and I have been before but many years ago before we new each other.

I'm looking forward to museums and tapas.

Edit my life away

Posted: 04-03-2008 09:05:19
Some friends of mine asked me to make a music video for them. We shot the video a couple of weeks ago so this weekend most of my time was spent editing. I enjoy the editing process I just wish I was a better camera man. Some of the footage isn't that great.

Jen and I are off to Barcelona on Thursday.

Mothers Day

Posted: 29-02-2008 14:13:47

Ahead of our time

Posted: 27-02-2008 14:13:33
I met up with Mike an old friend of mine last night. Over a few games of darts we discussed our early film making career.

After saving birthday and Christmas money at the age of 15 I was able to purchase a second hand camcorder. Que many weekends creating bizarre films such as 'The Jewel from the Dragons Beard', 'Attack on Fairway 13', 'Le Freak show' starring Jimmy Wobble Chin, Lefty the left footed hand boy, Shroud girl, The Wort Hog and InvisiBilly aswell as the host Monkey boy.

Our Zombie costume always consisted of a skirt, balaclava, a perished piece of latex and an old flannel that was worn as a jacket. I'm sure if we had put our work out then, programs like 'The Mighty Boosh' or 'Little Britain' would be old news.

Nice one

Posted: 25-02-2008 11:08:30
Jen and I had a great weekend. We ate and rested well. The highlight for me was bubble & squeak with faggots. It wasn't planned it just happened and it was great.

In this order

Posted: 22-02-2008 15:15:31
Darts, hair cut, eat, film, sleep, wake-up, eat, edit film, eat, meet Jen, do something interesting, sleep, wake-up, make big breakfast, do something interesting, eat, sleep, wake-up, eat, go to work.

Good film, great performance, fantasic score

Posted: 21-02-2008 11:36:14
I'd heard good things about 'There Will be Blood'. Critics have been bold enough to say that Daniel Day Lewis' performance is probably the greatest performance of anyone ever in the history of film making.

I have to admit the film is fantastic. Not only is the performance great but the musical score creates an atmosphere that's unique. None of that boring classical stuff instead the film uses abstract high pitched atmospheric sounds, similar to that of Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shining'

It gets my thumbs up.

Windscreen wash

Posted: 19-02-2008 16:07:47
I only ever seem to run out of windscreen wash when the roads have been gritted and all the salt spray from the car in front smears my windscreen with chalky residue.

When it's raining I have windscreen wash and when its a clear day and have no need to spray my windscreen I have wash.

Property reunited

Remember after our Christmas party I lost my wallet. Well it was returned to me yesterday. So I'm back to full card capacity. Thank you Hare & Hounds pub

I've got my mates coming up from London for the weekend. I'm filming a video for them. Lets hope the weather stays dry and bright.

Tandoori fish

Posted: 14-02-2008 15:26:02
I'd love to see what a tandoori fish looks like before it's cooked. I would imagine it's red and other fish fear it as it tastes too spicy for their delicate pallets.

We had a great night out last night, plenty of laughs, ale, arrows and head stands

Curried Goat

Posted: 12-02-2008 15:30:32
For my dads birthday we all gathered at the family home for curried goat. It was a new experience for me but one which I truly enjoyed.

It's inspired me to cook a proper Irish stew using mutton.

The Barber Institute

Posted: 11-02-2008 15:59:50
If your stuck for something to do on a Sunday afternoon. I highly recommend visiting The Barber Institute which is part of the University of Birmingham. Not only is the building lovely but you also get to view original works by artists such as Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet, Bruegel, Toulouse-Lautrec, Gauguin, Rembrandt, Degas and Turner to name a few. All for free. Fantastic

Birthday celebrations

Posted: 08-02-2008 12:47:15
Jen and I have a few birthdays to attend over the next few days. Two on Saturday, one on Sunday and another on Monday.

It's unusual for Jen to have both Saturday and Sunday off so I'm looking forward to our weekend together

Straight from the pan into the man.

Posted: 06-02-2008 11:12:03
I managed 8 pancakes last night. My record is 9 but I couldn't handle and extra mouthful of pancake let alone a full one to equal my record.

For lent I'm giving up loosing darts after being 2-0 up.

Top Nosh

Posted: 04-02-2008 11:10:04
I too went to Waitrose to buy ingredients for Boeuf Bourguignon and Ratatouille which I cooked Sunday for Jen and her folks. Delia knows her stuff, the finishing dish was delicious getting the thumbs up from everyone.

Whats cooking

Posted: 01-02-2008 16:24:15
Jen's at work all weekend so I have no plans. I feel like cooking some sort of casserole. I made a shepherds pie last Sunday and it lasted til Wednesday.

It makes life easier if you haven't got to cook when you get in from work, don't you think?

Travelling along the motorway last night

Posted: 31-01-2008 17:27:07
My broken wing mirror flapped about and chipped more paint of the door, great!

Direct Vandalism

Posted: 28-01-2008 10:08:04
I left the house on Saturday morning to find my car had been a victim of vandalism.

The passenger side wing mirror (situated on the pavement side of the road) was dangling by it's wires. It must have taken some considerable force to break it. So much so it even chipped the paint work on the passenger door.

The other day a friend of ours had his rear window smashed in with a brick.

At the cinema on Saturday evening I saw an advertisement for Direct Line vandal cover. Conspiracy anyone.

Chicken run

Posted: 25-01-2008 11:46:08
I had a chicken burger for my lunch on Wednesday. I then had a chicken burger for my dinner Wednesday night. On Thursday morning I ate a chicken burger for my breakfast.

I felt weird last night. I wouldn't shut up all night and no one could understand what I was talking about. I blame the chicken which I'm almost certain was not free range.

London town

Posted: 23-01-2008 12:15:38
Gavin and I are off to London today. We're filming a band called The Millionstars. It's their first gig since being signed to the record label Godmonkey.

Cheeses from around the world

Posted: 21-01-2008 12:15:25
Took part in the pub quiz at the Wellington last night. With new recruits Al & Amanda.

We were doing ok until the wipeout round. Unfortunately I persuaded my team mates that Gorgonzola was a German cheese rather than a Italian. I was wrong, meaning that the rest of our points that round were wiped out.

Im my defence I was getting mixed up with Cambozola which is a German cheese.

New Computer

Posted: 16-01-2008 15:37:17
I have a new computer. It has Vista. I have no idea how it works... yet.

Bread & Butter puddin'

Posted: 14-01-2008 12:57:47
It's one of my favourite puddings. My dad made a cracking bread & butter pudding on Sunday supervised by mom who cooked a fantastic roast pork dinner.

I find that cream is more than sufficient in providing lubrication to my pudding. Jen goes for both custard and cream. This is a bit excessive in my book.

Can I just Say!

Posted: 11-01-2008 14:16:46
I was once bought a t-shirt by Marks future wife Sadie that read "Can I Just Say". She had it specially printed as this was my catch phrase.

I don't say it anymore.

I'd just like to add I always buy organic free range eggs and have done for many years.

Poke Tree

Posted: 07-01-2008 10:37:46
Removing the Christmas tree from the house was a mission. I opted to do it Saturday whilst Jen was at work. The problem was this. Every time a decoration was removed from the tree about a thousand needles preceded to drop off. Now because I'm a clever boy I had already prepared for such a disaster. Using layers of newspaper strategically arranged around the base of the tree I was able to collect most of the stray needles.

Once the tree was bare (quite literally as most of the needles were now located on our lounge floor) I preceded to take the tree out the front door and down the ally to our back garden to be left with the other twigs that use to be Christmas trees. The first obstacle I arrived at was the front door. As I tried to manoeuvre the tree through the doorway one of the branches flicked straight into my eye and then a very painful experience incurred.

Get that tree down

Posted: 04-01-2008 10:21:24
It's time for it to go. Once Christmas is over the tree is just a reminder of whats gone and it depresses me. Especially as I keep finding the needles of the tree in my weetabix.

Be prepared

Posted: 03-01-2008 10:40:53
Today I've bought with me my wellington boots and a waterproof coat, just in case it snows.

My Christmas

Posted: 02-01-2008 12:05:13
My Christmas was a very enjoyable affair. My sister Nina, did herself proud and cooked a fantastic Christmas dinner. I was pleasantly surprised how good it was considering she is labeled the microwave queen.

The family all enjoyed each others company which makes a change and Jen was her usual beautiful self making my Christmas a perfect affair.

Happy New Year!

£12 tree

Posted: 20-12-2007 12:00:20
Jen and I went for a cheaper traditional Christmas tree this year, instead of the posh ones that don't loose their needles. The guy at the garden shop said it's a fresh tree and should last the season. Although I have noticed a few stray needles lying around already.

It's a great shape though.

Good time

Posted: 17-12-2007 15:56:54
I think I've had my fare share of festive shandy's this year. The rest of my Christmas celebrations will involve less alcohol.

The Cherrymas party was spectacular. Food and merriment enjoyed by all. The only downer was finding my wallet missing the next day. I have a feeling it was stolen from my coat whilst drinking in the Hare & Hounds pub.

On Saturday I went to see Walsall play Leeds as a guest of Ian's. It was fantastic. We drew 1-1 but even so I don't think I've seen Walsall play as good before.

Lunch X-mas style

Posted: 14-12-2007 10:55:53
So as you probably know from the news and my colleagues blogs it's our Christmas meal today. We've opted for a luncheon rather than an evening meal as I think it allows more time for consumption.

My friends are not left over fried vegetables

Posted: 13-12-2007 12:34:34
I just want to point out. I do not know anyone called Bubble and for that matter Squeak.

Bauble & Squeak

Posted: 11-12-2007 14:52:46
Jen and I bought four Christmas presents yesterday. As soon as we hit the Bull Ring it all went down hill. We lost focus and spent far too much time faffing. I think we were hungry to be honest. Bubble & Squeak called.

Boxing

Posted: 07-12-2007 14:56:46
I may try and avoid listening to, or watching any news Sunday morning so that I can watch the boxing at my dad's lunch time.

Jen's at work Sunday so she won't mind.

Human League

Posted: 05-12-2007 17:09:54
Jen and I went with a friend of ours to see The Human League. They performed their acclaimed record Dare from start to finish and it was fantastic. They finished with "Together in Electric Dreams" which just made the night so much better.

Two presents down..,

Posted: 03-12-2007 15:08:50
Santa knows how many more to go. We're trying to get everything sorted earlier this year.

My last Christmas Eve included a trip to Boots in Walsall to loiter at the perfume counter with other blokes who had left purchasing presents to the last minute.

Lambticipation

Posted: 28-11-2007 12:50:08
I'm looking forward to minted lamb sausages and mash tonight.

The sausages were bought from Moseley farmers market on Saturday. I've had them before and they're fantastic.

Strange combination

Posted: 27-11-2007 13:14:37
I've just eaten gravy with baked beans.

No ale in the Inn

Posted: 26-11-2007 11:45:14
On Sunday Jen and I met friends for a carvery at The Old Crown in Digbeth. Apparently it's the oldest pub in Birmingham. The food was ok, there were no green vegetables which was unusual and disappointing. The major let down was the lack of ale available. Not one hand pump. You'd think the oldest pub in Birmingham would serve traditional ale.

Something beginning with 'N'

Posted: 23-11-2007 11:15:28
Jen and I were to attend the medieval fair in Ludlow tomorrow but as it's my sisters birthday in the evening we thought it best to leave as the trains to Ludlow aren't that great.

This gives me the opportunity to find a costume. Nina (my sister) loves fancy dress parties and has decided this year the theme is 'N' (last year the theme was green and somebody went as a wheely bin)

I think I'm gonna go as 'N'ina's brother. Jen can go as Nina's brothers, girlfriend

Perfume overload

Posted: 21-11-2007 12:24:06
A lady sitting in front of me on the bus this morning was doused in perfume. I was literally choking it was that strong.

I can still taste it in the back of my throat.

Weekend of games

Posted: 19-11-2007 13:44:08
We enjoyed the usual fish & chip Friday evening with the added bonus of a game of canasta that unfortunately Jen and I lost. Jen's folks were on form.

I got the bug whilst watching the darts on Sunday. So decided to set my board up and play while I was watching. Playing yourself doesn't half give you arm ache:)

After arrows I tried to teach the game of chess to Jen but unfortunately she hasn't the brain for it. I don't mean she's unintelligent quite the opposite, Jen was an A* pupil. She's hasn't a strategic mind. Sometimes I feel she lacks patience.

After I got board of playing myself at chess (Jen preferred to watch and learn the moves) we moved onto Monopoly. We completed the game in one hour with yours truly victorious.

Canasta

Posted: 16-11-2007 15:56:19
I'm hoping to play cards tonight. Jen's folks are coming round for fish & chips and maybe after we've eaten a game of Canasta will be initiated.

If you have never played Canasta, it's a fantastic game for four players and well worth a look.

My lucky day

Posted: 14-11-2007 10:34:13
Yesterday was a particularly lucky day for me. I came runner up in a competition and won a game of darts.

There's a man in the Welly who sells pate. If your interested he's the really big guy usually found standing at the bar.

Chilled out with hot fish cakes.

Posted: 12-11-2007 11:27:12
Spent a lovely Saturday with Jen. We chilled around the house, cooked brunch and in the evening after consuming Thai fish cakes went to see the new Elizabeth film.

On Sunday I cleaned my car and for my efforts found a £2 coin under the seat.

Purity and dampness

Posted: 09-11-2007 10:56:25
Had a great time at the brewery on Wednesday. It's always a great craic with the cherry boys and girls.

On a damper note I sat in a wet patch on the bus today and my bums wet. I don't know what the wet substance was

Matthew the Conkeror

Posted: 07-11-2007 12:13:12
Last night I smashed all competition to pieces my champion conker was unscathed after four matches undefeated.

I'm keeping it for next years championship.

I'm so glad my cold has eased of a little (touch wood). For tonight we are going on an ale expedition to Warwick

An old mate of my dad's who quite a few years back emigrated to the states has returned to the UK with his wife for short visit. During their stay in England they like to immerse themselves in British culture. And last night this is exactly what they did.

My dad, his friend Wayne and wife Pat, Jen and myself visited the Ladypool Road in Spark Hill, where we had booked a table (after numerous recommendations) at Al Frash.

I was a little diserpointed with the recent refurb. Turning a fairly ordinary but cosy restaurant into what can only be described as a characterless dentists waiting room.

After ordering our dishes. We sat and chatted, eagerly anticipating our food. After 20 minutes it arrived in the arms of our waiter, who on reaching over to place dad's meal managed to toss a hole sizzling balti dish of molten king prawn curry all over our visiting guests Pat and Wayne covering them from head to toe in eastern cuisine.

Thankfully no-one was injured.

Opera, Worcester and a Winter clean

Posted: 29-10-2007 10:16:30
The opera was fascinating. the set design was fantastic but like my colleagues I agree the venue wasn't the most appropriate.

On Saturday Jen and I visited Worcester. It was OK, a bit shoppy. We found a great pub though and enjoyed a few ales before we caught the train home.

Jen and I spent the whole of Sunday cleaning the downstairs. When I say clean I mean a deep cleanse. Cooker cleaned, furniture removed, suite covers washed, VHS tapes collecting dust put in the loft. It was a tiring exercise but also a rewarding one.

WithdrawAle

Posted: 25-10-2007 16:55:10
I haven't had a pint of HPA since Friday. I'm also missing competitive darts. I've been able to practice at home, now that I have set the dart board up in the bedroom (which Jen isn't impressed with bye the way).

Stardust

Posted: 22-10-2007 14:57:21
I went to the cinema yesterday to see Stardust. It reminded me of films like "The Never Ending Story" or "The Princess Bride", films that I really enjoyed as a kid. Anyway it's not bad. Go and see it if you fancy a light hearted adventure.

I was quite upset when Mel from Mel & Kim died.

It's my mate Deano's 21st birthday today. He's celebrating with a chinese meal at Cafe Soya which I'm looking forward to.

Jen's gone to London to visit her sister so I'll be on my own.

Copper coils & ambient sounds

Posted: 15-10-2007 18:22:53
The Text(un)caged exhibition was really quite fantastic. Imagine a warehouse with many speakers connected to microphones randomly set up around the space, a guy with a mixing desk in the centre and standing next to each mic a person reading from a script. Mixed among this set-up were various copper sculptures. The conductor at the mixing desk advised the audience to walk around during the performance as this would enhance our experience. It was quite fascinating watching people walk around a warehouse silently. It reminded me of prisoners walking around a prison yard.

Sound exhibitions tend to test your patience. I remember one installation that Jen and I saw lasted about 45mins. It involved and image of a man walking down a street in slow motion whist a sentence was repeated over and over. It was an endurance

Text (un)caged

Posted: 12-10-2007 16:37:13
Tonight Jen and I are going to the opening of an exhibition entitled "Text (un)caged"

It's an evening of text based experimental music and performance in collaboration with Birmingham ElectroAcoustic Sound Theatre (BEAST) and the University of Birmingham. Featuring works by John Cage and others and curated by composer Scott Wilson, this event pushes language to its limits and pays homage to silence.

Think there's free booze.

Talking Heads, cheese, port & 14 lamb chops

Posted: 08-10-2007 14:09:13
Jen and I spent an enjoyable evening consuming cheese and port at a friends house on Saturday. Four bottles of port were finished off and various cheeses sampled including a toffee cheese which I will not be trying again.

Free with the Observer this Sunday was a copy of Talking Heads live video "Stop Making Sense". If you like Talking Heads and have never seen this film before it really is worth watching. David Byrne who was responsible for the stage design and choreography of the concert really is a talented individual.

On Sunday I went round to my mom's. She cooked 14 lamb chops. They were nice.

Gav's too modest

Posted: 05-10-2007 12:20:09
He's a great darts player - good rhythm and is consistent unlike myself. My game is erratic. One day I'm fairly decent the next I'm a pile of donkey breath.

You find that most sports people tend to be fairly good at any sport activity they put their mind to.

Cinema tonight with Jen maybe a bite to eat. Sunday - dinner at my sisters new gaff.

Shopping is crap

Posted: 01-10-2007 12:37:35
I use to like shopping but now I find it tiring. My problem is there are too many clothes I like and can't decide which to purchase. Then during my indecision I decide, why spend money i haven't got which ultimately ends with me being back at square one with holes in my jeans.

Part of the problem is also my dislike of the amount of people, noise and just general hustle & bustle of the city centre on a weekend. Sunday is as bad as Saturday. No one goes to church anymore. Retail is the new religion and the bullring is the new church. Not that I'm religious but I try to keep Sunday a day of chilling with friends and family.

Clothes Upgrade

Posted: 28-09-2007 14:41:40
I'm finding it difficult to get into some clothes particularly the ones I've had for about 5 years.

I think it's time I went shopping. The last time I bought a new item of clothing Tony Blair was Prime Minister.

Food poisoning is horrible

This is something I found out Tuesday night after eating a Thai takeaway.

Don't think I can face anything Thai for a while.

Weekend spectacular

Jen and I ventured to the electric cinema on Friday evening. We use to frequent this cinema quite often but after it changed hands and upgraded to include sofa's and waiter service we stopped going, feeling that it had lost some of it charm. The programme now includes a greater number of mainstream titles which is disappointing but they still serve cake. Overall it wasn't that bad. I think we'll be going again in the future.

Sadie's birthday was lovely. Caught up with some old friends, drank, and made merriment.

Drink, food and a fine lady

Posted: 21-09-2007 16:49:59
Going out for a meal with my lovely girl Jen. We'll probably go to the cinema after. We want to see Hallam Foe which I think is only on at the Electric Cinema.

Tomorrow it's my good friend (and other half of the Loaf) Sadie's birthday party. So we have that to look forward to as well. Good weekend I think

Another Fishy Tale

Posted: 19-09-2007 12:06:20
Cooked warm pickled mackerel with sauteed potatoes last night. I couldn't find any tarragon vinegar so I used white wine vinegar instead and threw in a bunch of fresh tarragon. The dish also consisted of, white wine, onion, juniper berries, mustard seeds, black & white peppercorns, bay leaves, and couple of table spoons of caster sugar.

Whack it all in a pan add a good pinch of salt and bring to the boil.

Arrange the mackerel in a baking dish pour over the boiled liquid and enough hot water to just cover the mackerel fillets.

Lightly cover with foil and cook on gas mark 4 for 20 minutes.

Definitely do it again.

Celebrate good times, Come on!

Can't remember a better birthday. Lots of friends, good ale, plenty of funny situations. I think Gav's covered most things in his blog.

Thanks everyone for coming, really appreciate it. x

So yeah my birthday was on Monday but I'm celebrating this weekend.

Starting at the Birmingham Beer Festival at 13:00 and ending at the Hare&Hounds in Kings Heath sometime in the early hours of Sunday.

Camembert...

is very nice but a ripe one will stink the place out for days. This we found out during our Holiday in France which by the way was fantastic.

Playing bat & ball on the beach with 5 players was great fun. We managed to keep the ball up for 75 consecutive hits, an excellent achievement considering 3 of the players were female.

Off to France tomorrow

Table Tennis

Posted: 31-08-2007 09:57:16
I have just received information that there is a table tennis table at the cottage in Fauquembergues.

Jen has acquired a strained ligament in her left foot - I think she's scared of the competition.

Picnic in the park

Posted: 28-08-2007 10:36:28
It started with a trip to Rackham's world of food where various edible delights were purchased.

A paper, reading book, Frisbee and car rug packed - The preparation was complete and our picnic adventure began.

Don't ask me where we went. It was somewhere in Wolverhampton that began with 'B'. The weather was beautiful as was the food and company.

There was a fight at New Street Station last night.

There was a fight in the chip shop last night.

Tools for certain jobs

Posted: 17-08-2007 10:54:43
I like tools/utensils that are a combination of two or more tools or utensils. For example hanging in my kitchen I have a weighdle. It's a combination of a ladle and a weighing device.

Here is another combi utensil I came across in my pursuit of strange devises.

Mickey Mouse

Played a great game of darts last night. It was a game called Mickey Mouse, although I believe some people call it cricket or even triangles.

It's to complicated to explain,

New shoes

Posted: 13-08-2007 10:20:58
The highlight of my weekend was buying a new pair of black plimsolls to replace my old ones. I say old but I've only had them for 2 months and the soles disintegrated.

These new ones are really comfortable and the soles seem sturdier. Overall £2.99 well spent.

Too Short

I've got things to do this weekend. I don't think the weekend is long enough to fit it all in.

Have a great weekend everybody

I tried my first barley wine at the Wellie last night which was 9%. I only had half a pint. I nearly fell over getting into bed.

Our weekend in Falmouth was fantastic as was the weather. Pendennis Castle was a lovely location for Wendy and Dan's wedding ceremony.

During my stay in Cornwall I ate two portions of fish & chips. I did mix it up a bit for more variety by having Rock (I think it's called Rock Salmon) instead of Cod on the second occasion. It was rather nice. I also ate two Cornish pasties.

We played Frisbee and bat and ball on the beach all day Saturday and most of the day Sunday.

The ceremony is taking place in Falmouth Castle, Which should be fun. I hope the weather stays nice for them. See you Monday.

The deadline for the cherry art project is today. I've not made that deadline unfortunately.

I'm not making any excuses (well I am I'm writing my excuse in this blog). I just completely forgot about it until yesterday. I couldn't justify rushing it last night, as the project is meant to be fun. No point getting stressed.

Fair play to Al, Gavin, Mark and Rich who have completed theirs. I must admit they are excellent pieces of work.

Crumplets

Gavin F calls them crumpets. I call them pikelets.

Walkabout

Posted: 23-07-2007 12:15:56
Round 7 of the Wellington pub quiz last night involved the teams taking a little tour of the surrounding area, following clues and answering 10 questions. It reminded me of a school day trip (Especially as I was wearing an anorak). We followed each other around and exchanged answers with opposing teams. "I'll give you this answer if you give me that one"

It was a novel idea I must say and I did learn a few things. Such as the gate of the Phoenix building on Newhall St has 35 flowers incorporated into it's design. The total of the numbers on the bus stop on Margret St add to 2214 and did you know the bell in the clock tower of Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery is called Big Brum? I didn't and i was amusingly impressed.

What will I be doing this weekend?

Langoustine Linguini

Posted: 16-07-2007 16:27:25
The hi-light of my weekend was the langoustine linguini I cooked for Jen and I. It was dead easy.

Cook the pasta for a minute less than it says to

Whilst the pasta is cooking

Fry 3 finely chopped garlic cloves in 2 tbsp of olive oil and cook until they are slightly brown.

Add 1 finely chopped red chilli and cook for 2 minutes

Cut the langoustine in half length ways and gently fry in the garlic and chilly oil til slightly browned

Add half a glass of white wine and cook until the alcohol has evaporated - Take out the langoustines and leave on one side.

Add 4 plum tomatoes that have been skinned, deseeded and cut into quarters

Add 2 tbsp of tomato passata

Take the tomato sauce off the heat and add the langoustine when the pasta is cooked add the pasta. Toss the pasta in the sauce.

The linquini will soak up the flavours of the sauce whilst the starch in the pasta will help thicken the sauce.

Add a small amount of finley chopped flat leaf parsley and enjoy.

Langoustine linguini, job done.

Planning for a bright future.

Posted: 13-07-2007 10:48:42
I hope I'm NOT doing anything this weekend that involves spending money, or drinking alcohol.

A right stuffing

Posted: 11-07-2007 16:39:34
Probably the finest food I've ever eaten was consumed last night at the Yorke-Arms in north Yorkshire.

Check Mark's blog for a full itinerary of what was devoured but due to Mark's pescaterianism replace the Shaved Fennel, Pear & Truffle dish with Yorkshire Potted Beef & Ham Hock Terrine and the Garden Herb Gnocchi with Loin & Shoulder of Nidderdale Lamb.

I managed to eat and complete all nine courses. My favourite being Roast Turbot & Lobster Ravioli. Mmmm!

Oatibix

Posted: 10-07-2007 09:15:11
I was excited when I heard weetabix were branching out into the world of oats.

Having tried the new biscuits I'm utterly disappointed. They have no taste and are far to unstable, emidiately breakdown when in contact with milk. I would recommend avoiding these inferior breakfast biscuits and stick to the original weetabix, unless you have a medical dietary reason for choosing oats over wheat.

The rain in Wales is relentless

Posted: 09-07-2007 11:14:36
It rained most days whilst on holiday in Wales. This however did not spoil our enjoyment. Cricket on the beach can still be enjoyed even if you do have to wear waterproofs, and suitable water resistant footwear.

After the holiday in Wales was complete, a further two day trip to Manchester was undertaken for my friend Dan's stag do. Karting, meal, booze, club and hangover was the running order of events.

Oh yeah and I won the clevercherry Tennis For Free Dream Team league and banked £30. Unfortunately that has gone straight to Alex for the repayment of a kind loan.

Off again

Posted: 29-06-2007 16:47:28
Yeah so I was away last week for Glastonbury now I'm away for a full week. Jen and I are off to Pwelli in Wales with the in-laws. Never been before and I'm really looking forward to it whatever the weather.

See you in a week

Glastonbury mud fest

Posted: 26-06-2007 14:48:01
I think next year Michael should tarmac it all over then we'd have no mud.

No actually I had a fantastic time and saw many bands. Highlights being, !!! (pronounced Chk, Chk, Chk), The Chemical Brothers and The Beat.

When our photo's are ready I'll post the best, though I think you'll only see a mess of mud.

Big thank you's

Posted: 20-06-2007 12:09:28
Thanks to Ian Jen and I are fully prepared for Glastonbury. He's kindly lent us his tent and other camping essentials so our experience is greatly improved. I've got to say Jen and I are usually unprepared for the great outdoors.

I also must thank Ed for collecting our 18 pints of Enville ale. The kind lady at Enville called yesterday to say it wouldn't be ready for collection this morning so she kindly offered to take it to her home in Stourbridge tonight where Ed can pick it up from. Apparently she lives just around the corner from Ed.

I'd also like to thank Jen's mom for fixing the hole in my favourite jeans.

Thank you everyone.

Be prepared

I was a boy scout many years ago. You wouldn't have thought it had you have seen be at Glastonbury 2005. A couple of bin liners gaffer taped around my feet was my answer to dry comfort.

Not this time wellies all the way and i think I'll need em.

End the day the ale way.

Posted: 15-06-2007 10:16:02
We all went to the Welly last night and enjoyed a pint of HPA. It was good to see everyone giving the ale a try, even Gav a usual lager drinker enjoyed his pint.

I agree with Shaun. OMD's Architecture & Morality is fantastic. I have two copies on vinyl. One to keep for my collection the other to enjoy. The sleeve was designed by Peter Saville and is an excellent example of his clean but industrialised inspired work.

I've got a lot on this weekend. Getting stuff ready for Glastonbury, seeing my dad for Fathers Day, filming an asian music festival and djing.

The Good Life

Posted: 11-06-2007 10:52:50
Visited Jen's folks on Saturday to celebrate her mom's birthday. We spent a lazy day in the garden consuming what was a food marathon. The highlight being freshly dug new potatoes from our garden. If you fancy growing your own I highly recommend the early variety "Rocket".

Yesterday we went for a walk in the Clent hills, had a couple of pints in the Fountain and then returned home to cook haddock in tarragon and breadcrumbs (tarragon from our garden) with British asparagus and guess what? Yes potatoes from our garden. Pudding was caramelised apricots with mascarpone.

Glastonbury tickets have come

Posted: 08-06-2007 10:17:20
I can relax now. Now I need to find someone to take my tent down to guarantee a good pitch.

My weekend is yet unplanned but I'm hoping it will consist of exploration activities and quality cuisine.

Wish I'd have watched the football instead

Posted: 07-06-2007 16:51:18
So I missed the football to see Pirates of the Caribbean. It cost me 3 hours of my life. I'd say 1 an half hours of it were worth watching the rest was irrelevant drivel. The editor should be sacked!

It's worth watching if you enjoyed the previous installments but I would recommend you wait til the DVD is released so you can skip chapters of rubbish bits.

Soft baps or Crusty cobs?

Posted: 31-05-2007 15:40:32
I usually go for soft baps but today by accident I consumed a crusty cob (a mistake made by the young lady at Gordon Blues). It was far superior to the kind you now purchase in the supermarkets and reminded me very much of the kind I ate as a kid, lying on my belly whilst watching Saturday Grandstand with me Dad. The floor being the only place I could escape the thick dense smoke cultivating from dads fags.

Death by Sarnie

Posted: 30-05-2007 11:22:24
I feel like it's been a while since my last post which is not good. That P45 could be coming my way Sam!

My weekend was spent trying to amuse myself as Jin was working. I went to see Spiderman 3 and that was a waste of time, I posted a new blog on my alternative blog Dig:et:al. I even did some clothes washing which I'm not use to - I had to read the washing machine manual to find the correct settings for delicate colours, which unfortunately our machine doesn't seem to have. So instead the clothes had to be hand washed.

Visited my Dad on Sunday. He cooked me a Georgie Best - a three tiered fried sandwich consisting of bacon, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, and fried bread. I then had a heart attack hence my delayed blog post.

Anyway my ailment has ceased and I'm free to consume literature whilst journeying to work.

Went to the Welly Friday after work for Ed's birthday. Had an enjoyable game of darts with the cherry team. I must say Ed and Gav are pretty useful. I'm going to have to improve my game if I am to retain my 'Power' status.

Now Sam's bought a board it's become very competitive. Boys will be boys.

Wasted 90 minutes of my Saturday watching the FA Cup final. So much for my enthusiasm in Friday's blog.

FA Cup Final

Going to me dad's to watch the final tomorrow. I wouldn't say I'm a massive football fan but I do enjoy a watching a game every so often and a special event like the F.A. Cup. Last years was a cracker.

Enjoy your weekend people.

Broad Street Treat

Posted: 14-05-2007 13:36:46
Despite the rubbish weather Jen and I had a fantastic weekend. On Saturday we attended the matinee of 'Taking Care of Baby' at the REP - despite it's sad story the play was fabulous and the acting was superb.

After we went to our favourite restaurant Cafe Ikon and had the usual selection of tapas delights. The night was concluded by a visit nearby pub for drinks with friends.

All this quality time was achieved around the Broad Street area which I found a pleasant surprise considering I usually try to avoid it like dysentery.

Check what we found in our cupboards at home!

Bull's Eye

Posted: 11-05-2007 11:44:33
Myself, Al and Sam have taken to the game of darts. Admittedly we're rubbish but they say practice makes perfect so I've arranged plenty more excursions to the local pub to hone our skills.

Not much planned for the weekend. Fish & Chips tonight from George & Helen's. May go to the theatre tomorrow afternoon and chill in town with a few old mates in the evening. A BBQ was planned but I think the weather is going to be disappointing.

Fish pie & Skinheads

Posted: 08-05-2007 13:51:15
Cooked a lovely fish pie yesterday. Maybe it was a fisherman's pie. Anyway, a nice chunky piece of cod, undyed smoked haddock and some shrimps. Cooked in a lovely white sauce flavoured with the liquor from the cooked smoked fish and then finished off with a crusty mash potato topping. (the alternative fish pie having a puff pastry top and sides in my opinion).

I prepared the fish dish in advance so that it would be bunged in the oven on our return from seeing 'This is England' at the cinema. Great film set in 1983 about how the skinhead culture (initially an innocent cult movement) was taken over my raciest idiots. In an attempt to recruit member to the National Front.

The film director Shane Meadows is angry that the film has been certified 18 rating. As the film has a social message for kids. In my opinion the film wasn't as bad as anything you see on the TV and I think that he every right to be disappointed with the BBFC.

The fisherman's pie was fantastic!

As was Marks birthday bash. Which involved much drinking and games of killer. I think I got a bit carried away with the pool as Jen eventually insisted I was being boring and wasn't to play anymore.

Noodle Juiced

Posted: 04-05-2007 10:01:49
Jin couldn't eat all of her Chinese noodle dish last night so she asked for it to be packed in a box for further consumption at the homestead. (by the way you had to do this yourself -box and bag provided, it's down to yourself to package unwanted food)

On the bus home I felt a slight warm wet sensation running over my lap. The sauce from the monk noodles had leaked from the bag and gone all over my nice jeans. Jin thought it was hilarious, I didn't. To top it off, when getting from my seat to depart the bus I slipped on a pool of gravy that had gathered on the floor around my feet. I traveled the length of the bus like a professional ice skater, fortunately keeping my balance and saving what little grace I had left... The bus stunk of Chinese food by the way.

A Chinese Stuffing

Posted: 30-04-2007 12:53:42
The shoot went extremely well. Everyone involved got stuck in and gave a great performance.

Went for Chinese yesterday to celebrate Jen's dads birthday. After the fantastic meal I was truly stuffed. I couldn't even manage some of Jen's moms superb home baking.

Posted: 27-04-2007 15:44:51
Tomorrow I'm recording a video for a friends band. We need extras (preferably boys) to run around in their pants and act like they're having great fun doing so.

If you wanna take part get your bodies down to the warehouse on 33 Freeth Street, Ladywood for 13:00.

Greenwich Meal Time

Posted: 24-04-2007 14:16:11
Spent a fantastic weekend in London with Jen and her sister Jacqueline. We mostly stayed around Greenwich. Ate in some eateries, drank in some public houses, and walked in some royal parks. Jac is so lucky to be living in such a nice area. I would love to live in Greenwich but a two bedroom terrace is worth about £600,000. Out of my price range me thinks.

On Sunday morning, more by chance than planning, we managed to witness the 27th London marathon. Jacqueline's top floor balcony looked out onto Creek Road. So we dragged the sofa out and cheered every runner that ran, jogged and walked past. They had run 6 miles up to this point so the stragglers who were walking by now had another 20 miles to run (walk).

The CSS gig was pretty fantastic. Great support acts. Ratatat like a cross between Iron Maiden and Tangerine Dream. Tilly and the Wall were special. No drummer, instead they had a girl tap dancing the rhythm on a box. Jen liked em.

Bringing home the bacon

Posted: 18-04-2007 15:46:10
I got ripped off the other day. Four rashers of award winning, organic, dry cured, smoked bacon - £6.25. That's over a pound per rasher. I've still got £3 ponds worth left in the fridge that needs to be scoffed before it's no good.

Last nights auction was a success. Sam managed to purchase the artwork he wanted for the new office. Mark Saatchi has doubled his art collection.

After the auction a few of us went for fodder. Four lots of couples, Sam & Sarah, Alex & Amanda, Tom & Sophie and Jin and myself. Fantastic food fantastic company.

Garlic fingers

Posted: 16-04-2007 11:16:28
My fingers stink of garlic. There is just no way of ridding the smell from my hands (I think that's the first time I've ever used my name in that context)

I cooked salt cod stew for Jin and myself. This dish consists of 8 cloves of garlic hence the finger problem and probably a breath and perspiration problem. Sorry colleagues

Saturday involved a successful tour of Coventry's beer emporiums with Jin and Slobodan. Highlight beer was 'Garton's Chocolate Frog' an 8% porter. Which was kinda' like drinking a pint of wine.

Oh yeah, congratulations Ed and Linz on your new baby boy.

No beer belly in sight

Posted: 13-04-2007 15:43:09
Beer festival in Coventry tomorrow. Yeah I know, it does sounds like I go on the pursuit of beer every weekend. Just to clear things up the Walsall beer festival didn't happen due to the fact I was still busy dancing to the Dirty Dancing soundtrack at a mates party. So this will only be my second beer festival in two weeks. Which ain't that bad is it?

Walsall

Posted: 11-04-2007 14:31:04
Easter Sunday was a success. Mom decided on a BBQ to feed the masses and I was roped in as chef. This gave her the opportunity to relax and drink wine.

Monday my old man took me to see Walsall play. His mate from North Carolina was visiting - and as they're both old boys from the Walsall football scene, loads of people kept popping up for a chat. Walsall 1 - Hereford 0

On the evening a couple of my good friends and yours truly visited Highgate brewery for there members night. £2 to get in and free booze all night. Oh yeah I wan first and second prize in the raffle, no guessing what the prizes were. Twas good

Big family Easter meal planned for Sunday. My mom is playing hostess to Jen's folks and sister as well as my sisters boyfriend, his daughter and parents. Twelve guests all together. I don't see it going smoothly.

Glastonbury, here we come

Posted: 02-04-2007 16:07:36
I tried for ages to get tickets for Glastonbury but just couldn't get through. After an hour and a half it wasn't looking good for us, until my mate Martin called saying he'd got through yet again and asked if I'd like him to purchase our tickets. Yes please I said. So yeah Jin and I are off to Glasto.

Next thing to do know is hope for good DRY weather.

Festival of Beer

Posted: 30-03-2007 13:58:13
Right tonight I'm Dj'ing at Subway. Looking forward to that as usual but should I stay off the booze as tomorrow, Jin, Slobodan and myself are attending Walsall's beer festival and I would like to be on form for that.

Also we have to be up early on Sunday to try and purchase Glastonbury tickets. My fingers are crossed.

Surprise Present

Posted: 27-03-2007 12:14:59
Jen bought me a fantastic Italian cookery book. Giorgio Locatelli's Made In Italy Food & Stories. It's that heavy you could kill somebody with it.

I'll be cooking Jen and I something from the book this week. Not sure what yet. I'll let you know how it goes.

A night of culture

Posted: 23-03-2007 11:53:11
Jin and I are going to the REP tonight to see Uncle Vanya. It's written by the famous play write Anton Chekhov and is meant to be quite heavy. I can deal with heavy. We might pop for tapas at Cafe Ikon too. The food there is fantastic.

I beat my cold. Well I think I have, I feel better today. I haven't sneezed once today.

Fat in a packet

Posted: 21-03-2007 15:37:34
Do you like pork scratchings? I do. I like them to have equal proportions of fat to rind. My friend Slobodan, prefers his scratchings to have a higher proportion of fat.

Last night our packet of pork rind contained a scratching the size of a rizla packet. It still had hairs attached too which was a bonus.

First Class Second Hand Markt

Posted: 16-03-2007 15:32:24
So I'm back and it looks like they missed me. We've run out of squash, no hand towls, don't know how to use the smart stamp system. It's nice to know your needed.

Anyway Berlin was excellent. Had a great time with Jin. The weather was beautiful. No needs for coats, just jumpers and t-shirts. Considering this time last year Berlin was under 6 inches of snow I think we were lucky.

The city has so much history to it I don't think we did it justice with the time we had.

One of the highlights was the charity superstore "Humana". For jen it was four levels of heaven (she collects clothes - our spare room has turned into her walk in wardrobe).

We had to purchase an extra suitcase to fit in all the new wares. That's how good/bad it was.

P.S.
Gav's in the house of Death again tonight. Looking forward to it. Hopefully it won't be another lost weekend.

I'll Send You a Postcard

Posted: 09-03-2007 17:38:54
Jin and I are off to Berlin. Really looking forward to it. I'm taking a spare suitcase to fill with records. Yep yep yep

Dancing Shoes

Posted: 08-03-2007 17:22:00
Jin and I are off to see LCD Soundsystem tonight. I haven't been to a proper gig in ages so I'm looking to it. I've bought some new shoes especially for the occasion but I don't think I'll wear them. They're already giving me grief. Instead I shall wear my trusted old dancing plimsolls.

Bog Standard Belly Buster or Fantastic Fry-Up?

Posted: 06-03-2007 15:51:51
What makes a good cooked breakfast? Well I have come to the conclusion that it's the quality of the sausage that separates a good breakfast from a bad one.

It's the first thing I go for on my plate and ultimately decides weather I'm about to thoroughly enjoy the next few minutes of food consumption.

I've just eaten a cooked breakfast from "Gordon Blue" the cafe over the road. And whilst it was a satisfactory meal it could have been so much more if the sausage hadn't have been poor. By poor I mean a tasteless cylinder of formed bread.

For a breakfast to qualify as a exceptional fry-up it must consist of a quality sausage/sausages. The sausage must be 100% meat and be well seasoned. When I cut into a sausage I want it to burst open with real full textured meat. I do not want my knife to slice through the banger like I'm slicing through pate.

Other improvements of ingredients can improve a breakfast, like a quality rasher of bacon, the runniness of an organic free range egg or even a nice piece of black pudding but ultimately in my opinion it's the sausage that makes all the difference.

Sky.com...

Posted: 05-03-2007 12:13:01
Did my head in on Saturday. I tried to install a new wireless modem for my dad, because unfortunately the one that Sky broadband provide doesn't produce a strong enough signal. Could I get it to work? The answer is no.

Instead of providing you with a username and password to access the Internet they have embedded the username and password in the modem itself. This is to prevent you from using other modems, as their technical operatives are only trained to help you with the one that is provided (at a coat of £49.99). It's all rubbish.

Since Saturday I've done some research into the matter. Apparently you can hack into the modem to retrieve the required information.

With a little advise from the cherry techies I might give it a go.

300 looks Fantastic

Posted: 01-03-2007 11:54:29
Went to the cinema to see Hot Fuzz. It was just what I expected and yeah I enjoyed it.

The highlight though was the trailer for the film 300. It's based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller telling the story of the ancient battle of Thermopylae, where 300 Spartans fought to the death against a massive Persian army.

It's filmed using digital video technology giving the film a golden bronze glaze. Anyway it looks fantastic.

sitting in the washing machine once the cycle is done, else you'll end up with clothes that smell like Stilton cheese.

Unfortunately this is whats happened to my polo shirt. As a result most of the cherry team are avoiding me today.

I didn't...

Posted: 26-02-2007 12:34:08
do much this weekend, which is just what I hoped would be the case.

Admittedly I did go to Sainsburys on Sunday, but it was for a good cause. The cupboards and fridge are now stocked and every visit to the kitchen can now be accompanied by a savoury nibble or a sweet treat. Whatever takes my preference.

Can't get enough...

Posted: 23-02-2007 17:12:05
Robinsons pink grapefruit and barley squash. It's beautiful. So much so I've gone off plain water, which can't be very good for me.

Got some serious chillin planned for the weekend. If I leave the house Sunday other than to get the papers and maybe a walk in the park. I won't be pleased.

Have a great weekend everyone. x

Jen cooked us dinner on Monday

Posted: 21-02-2007 14:46:25
Beautiful risotto. Just a store cupboard job cus we're both skint. Onions, celery, lemon, rosemary out the garden and a bit of parmesan (we always try to keep chunk of Parmigiano Reggiano in the fridge for such occasions).

We're celebrating shrove Friday this year. Our busy schedule doesn't allow us to celebrate pancake day on the same day as everyone else. So Friday night it's Delia's pancake recipe and a film. Lemon and sugar all the way, although Jen will probably contaminate the flat cakes with maple syrup and ice cream. IT'S WRONG!

Fashioned...

Posted: 19-02-2007 10:45:38
a moustache Saturday night for a bet. The first attempt was loosely based on the moustachio design but was badly executed and made me look sinister. After some alterations the final version took the form of your the basic tash which can only described as a slug crawling over the upper lip.

I've had some positive comments so far so I think I might keep it for a while. See if I can bring it back into fashion. I've got a good track record with this kind of stuff. You could say I was partly responsible for bringing the mullet back into the limelight a few years back.

Wagamama's

Posted: 16-02-2007 11:21:16
Ate at Wagamama's last night and it was very pleasant.

Jen had Amai Udon, a dish which is both sweet and sour. Consisting of udon noodles teppan-fried with egg, fried tofu, prawns, red onions, leeks and beansprouts. topped with crushed roasted peanuts and a wedge of lime.

I had some special thing with prawns, squid, fish cake, marlin, bok choi, red onion and japanese style rice. It was very nice indeed.

Jen had a special buy one get one free voucher from work so the whole experience came to just under 10 squid.

I'm djing at DEATH tonight. Instead of drinking myself into a pit of despair, I'm going to drive and hopefully be fresh for a lads night of poker tomorrow.

Pigged out...

Posted: 15-02-2007 11:34:15
on unhealthy food last night in the hope that it would take me to the next level.

Chicken tikka on nan, extra mayo and a potion of chips. Followed by half a packet of biscuits. I know it can't be good for the important parts of my body

I don't do it all the time. But sometimes when Jen isn't around I get an urge to eat bad food.

Anyway it didn't do any good. In fact it had the opposite effect. Yesterday I was 62.8kg today I'm 62.2kg - don't get it

Celebrate good times...

Posted: 13-02-2007 12:29:38
Come on!

Jen and I had a great time at Shaun's wedding. It was set in a beautiful hall that once belonged to Joseph Chamberlain

Drank lager, guinness, champagne, red wine and brandy. Woke the nest day without a hangover. Have no idea how i managed that. I'm glad though because it meant I was on good form for may dad's surprise 60th birthday party.

I'm never going to forget the look on his face when he realised what was going on. Great night, great weekend

Glad...

Posted: 09-02-2007 21:52:09
I bought my wellies. Walking home tonight. Think I'll beat most of the traffic by the looks of it.

Looking forward to tomorrow. Hope the weather isn't to bad for Shaun's wedding. At least it will be, in the words of Billy Idol "A White Wedding"

of my weekend is lost. I have flashbacks but don't know whether they are real events or dreams. So I'll tell you what I do know.

Gav rocked it big time at Death Friday night. My mom cooked a great fish pie Sunday evening.

Gav's In The House

Posted: 02-02-2007 14:27:06
As you probably already know from his blog our Gav is flexin the wheels of steel at the mighty Death at the Disco tonight.

Been wanted to get him down for a while. Should be a really good night. Come if you don't mind dancing and sweating your assets off.

From Zero to Zero

Posted: 31-01-2007 14:58:01
Managed empty the fridge of Coke Zero today. Rich was kind enough to quaff the last can during his luncheon.

That last can was starting to annoy me. It had been lingering in the fridge for far to long. I'm glad to see the crushed can of it.

Our Boiler is bust

Posted: 29-01-2007 11:38:32
Having a shower in our house is a mission. It's a two man job. One person takes a shower while the other bangs the combi boiler consistently so that it heats the water.

If there is no second team member one is forced to shower in freezing water. It is a very unpleasant experience. Especially when the house is also cold as a result of the faulty boiler.

Had a visit from the landlord Saturday to examine the problem, and guess what, the central heating system worked. It's sods law. Hopefully he is sending someone out today to have a look at it.

Happy Birthday

To anyone who has a birthday today.

Baguettes hurt my mouth!

Posted: 25-01-2007 13:45:07
They're lovely, but they don't half cause unnecessary harm to your pallet. Talk about the Texas chainsaw massacre. After a beautifully fresh ham salad baguette my mouth feels like it's appeared in a classic horror film. Slashed and shredded I'm finding it hard to speak.

There needs to be some sort of health warning, when purchasing a "French based bread" "Beware can cause severe ulceration of the mouth"

Whilst talking about health warnings. I think crisp packets must warn consumers of the dangers of tipping the remainder of a nearly empty packet into your mouth. The other day I tipped salt and vinegar crumbs into my eye... Yep it did hurt.

Quids In

Posted: 24-01-2007 12:08:47
Jin, Vic and myself took part in the Sunflower Lounge pub quiz. At one stage we were leading but in the final two rounds dropped back to finish in 3rd place (out of 7 teams). Which I think is pretty respectable considering we were only a three man team.

I paid a quid, in an attempt to win a pot of money which had rolled over to £75. I never win anything I thought I was pretty much throwing my quid down the drain. Not the case last night.

My name was pulled out of the hat and I was asked an "all or nothing" question. When was "The Magic Roundabout" first aired on British television? A 1960, B 1965 or C 1970

I answered B and won the pot which had accumulated to £91.

I think that'll pay this months council tax.

Tapas...

Posted: 22-01-2007 15:28:17
iz the bessst!

Ate at Cafe Ikon Friday night. Jin and I enjoyed various delights including cod cheeks with tomatoes and lentils, grilled chilli squid, chorizo cooked in a tomato and sherry sauce, asparagus with manchego cheese, Spanish tortilla and potatoes aioli

Stunk of garlic the next day but who cares, not the missus cus she stunk too!

Ladies Deodorant

Posted: 19-01-2007 11:19:18
I'm a big believer in it. I can't stand the smell of men's deodorant, it's peppery and I find it makes you smell worse than the natural odours it tries to cover.

I bought a canister of doves finest this morning whilst on my way to work, but having no receptacle to store my purchase left the bought item on the bus.

So I was forced to wonder the streets of the Jewellery quarter looking for a chemist that stocked my preferred ladies antiperspirant.

Whilst roaming the streets in this particular part of Birmingham I was amazed by some of the architecture, the small lanes and passages that house master crafts men, practising there specialised skills.

I did end up spending over £5 on ladies toiletries, but in doing so, was able to seen a part of Birmingham which I thought had long since vanished.

I'm reading...

Posted: 16-01-2007 10:04:55
Mervyn Peake's modern classic "The Gormenghast Trilogy" and it's fantastic. I've been wanting to read this book for ages but never remembered that I wanted to read it.

A gift from the potential in-laws has remedied my reading ambitions. I now look forward to small gaps in my hectic schedule so I can sit and explore Peake's fantastically walled world of Gormenghast.

Chilled weekend planned

Posted: 12-01-2007 14:46:16
Fish & Chips tonight and maybe a film. Saturday I'm gonna help my dad find a cheep laptop, then I'm dj'in at Panic. Sunday morning I'm taking Jin's mom & dad to the plane station. Then in the afternoon I'm meeting friends for pub grub and beer.

Maybe I didn't plan very well!

Pub of the Year

Posted: 10-01-2007 14:04:20
My regular The Wellington has won the CAMRA Pub of the Year award for the third year in a row. If you haven't already been a guest of the pub, you really need to visit and experience it's quality.

I enjoyed it that much last night I forgot to pay. It wasn't until I was lying in bed that I remembered I'd forgot to settle my tab, whoops.

Tree down

Posted: 08-01-2007 17:04:56
The Christmas tree came down Saturday and to be fare I'm pleased to see it go. Not because it was a bad tree, quite the opposite I think it was our best one yet.

It was just making me depressed. All the festive activities had terminated and the tree was a reminder of what was.

It took twenty minutes to dispose of. Baubles in a box, lights unlashed, cards compacted, decorations undone, tree tipped (in the back garden not in the street).

Anyway the lounge looks twice as big now and I can open the blinds without getting poked in the bum.

Had a fantastic Saturday in Bridgenorth with Jen and my mom. Even though we were unable to find a suitable bathroom cabinet we still managed to have a lovely day surveying the quality food stores, checking the chaza's, drinking ale and eating good food.

No rest for the wicked

Posted: 05-01-2007 16:43:28
I'm DJing tonight at Subway. It's Death at the Disco's 3rd birthday so should be a good one. I'm driving so we should get in at a respectable time too.

Jin and I are off to Ludlow again tomorrow with my mom. Gonna help her find a cabinet for her new bathroom. So I'm really looking forward to that and I'm not being sarcastic.

Not a Poker Joker

Posted: 05-01-2007 13:41:10
Learnt to play poker over the Christmas period. Santa delivered a proper poker table and chip set to my game addicted sister, Nina.

We played the Texas Hold Em' version which I believe is what is televised during the early hours of the morning. It's a good game when you get into it.

I learnt something about Jin that I didn't know. She's a poker shark. She took everyones money then said she had to go because she had work the next day. I'm taking her down the local casino, see what she can win us

Hello 2007

Posted: 02-01-2007 16:32:23
Back in the working domain after a lovely Christmas break. Fridges seem to be crammed full with savoury nibbles during the festive season and I cant resist an easy bite, especially if it is of the savoury variety.

My Christmas did lack one important ingredient, my moms trifle. I only get to have it once a year and was looking forward to it more than my turkey dinner. I usually get through about four bowls of the stuff Christmas day, but not this year.

My godmother offered to make the trifle, so mom couldn't refuse. It was nice but not as nice.

Anyway Happy New Year to you all. Hope it's a good one for you.

Apologies for the Cheese

Posted: 21-12-2006 16:19:34
This year has been a real roller coaster for me. Having not been well for so long it feels really good to be myself again.

I finish 2006, with a bit of weight around my waist, money in my pocket, a beautiful lady and a job that I love.

I'll be starting 2007 without my mentor Stu who has shown me the ropes, taught me the tricks, but who is now leaving for pastures new. Hopefully I will continue his good work. Farewell Stu and good luck.

The DJ's left the Building

Posted: 19-12-2006 16:09:26
The Chrimbo meal was fantastic. At one point I was doing 'The Table Clench'. This is a maneuver one uses to help stuff copious amounts of food into ones body. It was funny because it took just one prawn to push me over the edge.

Dj'd Saturday night. By 2:30am I'd had enough and there was still an hour and a half left. So Jin and I popped out for a kip in the car. Then went back to play last 15 minutes.

Think I might be getting to old for this malarkey.

It's Ruby Murry Time...

Posted: 15-12-2006 11:37:49
There's no need to be afraid,
It's curry time, we drink bear and our inhibitions fade,

I could go on, but considering the original song was produced to raise money for a starving country. It's probably a little inappropriate.

It's Not Sparse it's Minimal

Posted: 11-12-2006 12:29:13
Jin and I put the Christmas tree up yesterday. For some reason it doesn't seem as full with decorations as in previous years. Have we mislaid a box of sparkling goodies, maybe.

In my mind this has not effected it's presentational value but rather created a feeling of confidence and clarity.

Cheesed Off

Posted: 08-12-2006 16:54:22
Ate too much cheese last night. Had to wait til 20:00 for food. By then I was starving. Filled my plate up will a mangery of cheeses, sat in the corner and stuffed my face. Repeated the process three times then was nearly sick.

It's cheese night...

Slow releasing = Hungry

Posted: 06-12-2006 12:15:01
If I have porridge in the morning, come 11 o'clock I'm famished. Whats that all about?

Handy Man

Posted: 04-12-2006 13:08:09
Saturday I Fixed my dads Sky box, fixed his blind and fixed is clock. Then went to my moms and painted her bedroom. In return she cooked me a really nice dinner. Moms dinners are always the best. Mmmm

Small Mouth

Posted: 30-11-2006 14:57:38
I hate going to the dentist. They always have a problem accessing my mouth due to its abnormally small size.

Trying to say "I can't go any wider" while your mouth is at full stretch with hands shoved inside is quite impossible.

Weekend of Food

Posted: 28-11-2006 15:49:23
Went to the Good Food Show Friday and enjoyed a day sampling free gourmet delights.

Food purchased = Manx Kippers, Blacksticks blue cheese and a bottle of Cains Raisin Beer.

Saturday involved a trip to Mosley farmers market. (Winner of the Midland region award for best farmers market)

Food purchased = some apples, smoked cheese, damson jam and a some bread

Sunday Jin and I visited Ludlow, where a Medieval festival was in full flow. Men in armor whacking each other with axes and swords and young kids poking me in the eye with their bow and arrows. My mission was to eat meat and drink ale... Mission was accomplished.

Food purchased = French smoked sausage, award winning pork pie, mature Elgar cheese, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, coriander seeds, and a load of veg.

Sat in the pub on me own last night and drank a couple of pints of ale. I've heard it's all down hill from here.

So whats it all about...? It's a Rave Dave

Posted: 20-11-2006 10:23:49
Went to London yesterday to appear in a video for my mates band Trash Fashion.

They were recording a video for 'Rave Dave'. I had to prance about in a wolf costume, emphasising the old small box little box routine.

I nearly fainted it was so hot under the lights, my legs went like jelly and my vision filled with swirls of multi colour... May be it was just the effect the song had on me after listening to it for the 180th time.

Anyway tune into MTV2 from the 4th December and check it!

You'll like this one!

Posted: 17-11-2006 16:48:39
My sister celebrates her 26th birthday next week so she's having a little birthday party tomorrow.

She's asked me to play some tunes - Last time, after a few lager shandies, my music selection became slightly distorted and slipped into the dark depths of German electro house... After that I was asked to stop.

Weight update: Was weighed at the doctors today. Their scales suggest I am 9 1/2 st. Not sure if a believe them. I still only feel 9st.

Food glorious food....

Posted: 15-11-2006 16:15:56
Bangers, mash and onion gravyyyyyy.

Sicilian sausages fried in a little olive oil with slices of cox's apples. Beautifully creamed mash potatoes and caramelised onion gravy. Some peas as well for my vegetable intake. It's what I call winter fare.

Odd habit

I know it looks like dog produce, but trust me it tasted fantastic.

Jesus I Need A Haircut

Posted: 13-11-2006 17:30:48
I haven't had my hair cut in over a year. To be honest I haven't known what to do with it. I've just been cultivating the Jesus look

I'm thinking A Certain Ratio vibe. What do you reckon? All idea's welcomed.

A Mild Night

Posted: 13-11-2006 10:24:31
I've seen the light, and the light is mild. I don't understand why people drink lager. It doesn't taste of much and is bloaty.

Had a pint of Z Rod, Dark Star and Tower Falls last night. The Dark Star was the winning ale of the evening. It was quite dark but not dense. It had a beautiful sweet taste and went down the hatchet like pure silk.

On my way home picked up Chicken Tikka on fresh Nan from Kingfisher. Where does it all go? I hear you ask. Must be my hollow legs.

Hot Head

Posted: 06-11-2006 13:49:52
A firework exploded on my head yesterday... I'm not hurt just a little singed and there's a bold patch where hair use to be.

What I have learnt from the incident is to follow instructions before lighting industrial fireworks.

Mad Bus Driver

Posted: 01-11-2006 15:39:36
My journey to work this morning involved the most bizarre bus ride of my life.

Having boarded the 82 bus on the Bearwood high street, the bus driver stopped, put his hazards on and popped into Greggs for his breakfast. After a couple of minutes we continued the journey.

In Cape Hill, at a bus stop just before the main junction. An old lady tried to board the bus. As she navigated the large step onto the passenger vehicle, the bus driver told her (with a mouth full of Greggs pastry), "@*>?in' come on", and proceeded to drive off leaving the old lady behind.

As it was, he'd missed his opportunity to get through the lights and was cursing the little biddy for making him loose some time.

As I was the only passenger the driver decided that he would take a short cut - missing out the time delaying road works on the Dudley Road but still get us into town where I needed to be dropped off. This was a mistake. After a few turns here and a few turns there we were lost and I ended up giving him directions to get back on track.

When we did finally reach town. The driver did not want to drop me at the designated stop, but made me get off in the middle of a duel carriageway, so that he could turn the bus around and head back to make up some more off his time.

I wonder what will happen on tomorrows journey.

Belly Draft...

Posted: 30-10-2006 13:18:29
I'm into it big style. I just love pork fat and on a piece of pork belly you get a substantial amount. Sometimes the proportion is 50% lean meat, 50% fat.

Last night Jin and I had Potatoes Dauphinoise, roasted sweet potatoes and carrots. I had a massive piece of belly draft (Jin did not as she's a pescaterian).

For pudding Jin had made a beautiful apple crumble. The apples where winky just how I like them and the custard (birds) was the perfect combination of stodgy sweetness.

After a night of heavy drinking it was just what I needed. Proper stodge - it's the perfect hang-over cure

weight 9st (more belly pork needed)

Wizards Wobbler

Posted: 26-10-2006 15:08:04
Went to a proper good ale house last night, The Wellington. They've got 15 ales on draft and you order by pump number

I had a number 15 Hereford Pale Ale, number 9 Wizards Wobbler and a number 6 Mutleys Revenge.

Number 15 had a sweet flowery taste I'd give it 8/10

Number 9 was fruity and slightly darker in appearance, it was like amber nectar 10/10

Number 6 was my least favorite but was still nice. Again a mid amber colour with fruity qualities. 7/10

To be honest after this pint I was feeling a little light headed. Next visit I might drink half pints so i can experience i few more liquid delights.

White Pumps

Posted: 25-10-2006 10:59:53
My new pumps are too bright, it hurts me to look down.

Birmingham Blues

Posted: 18-10-2006 13:39:33
Went to see The Blues play last night and they lost against Delia's side Norwich 0-1.

Jin's Auntie's were hoping I'd bring them luck... I think I need to stay way clear of Birmingham City from now on, otherwise they'll end up in the Vauxhall Conference.

Just polished of some of Michelle's Tasty Chocolate Brownie. Think I've got crumbs stuck in my beard, but I don't care. I can eat em on the bus home if I get peckish.

Cream Tea

A scone (pronounced like "gone"), clotted cream and strawberry jam is, in my opinion one of the most perfect combinations of food... ever.

Yesterday at my friend Michelle's I had the most beautiful cream tea. The scones which she had baked herself, were better than any I have had in Devon or Cornwall. They were slightly crispy on the outside and soft and crumbly inside. Perfect

I'm a big believer in the method of putting butter, then jam and finally the clotted cream onto my scone. This is in fact the Cornish way of preparing a scone. The people of Devon put the jam on top of the cream. I don't think you get the right taste sensation this way, always jam then cream deffo.

Weight after Cream Tea still 9st (maybe this is because I'm using public transport more, instead of driving everywhere...To much exercise. I need to stop walking.

Glow Stick Juice

Went to see Klaxons, Shitdisco and Datarock last night and got sprayed with glow stick juice... I looked like I'd got some sort of alian disease.

I always thought that stuff was like acid... Obviously not.

Not sure of my weight. Don't have easy access to a weighing device but I reckon I'm still 9st

Day of Nice Things

Saturday was a lovely day. Jin and I went into town to meet friends for lunch. We ate in that Hudson's place near Victoria square. It's a period styled tea room, that does gourmet sarnies. I had rare beef, balsamic onions and creamed horse radish sauce. Jin had Smoked salmon with mango and creme fresh on granary bread.

In the evening I cooked King prawn risotto with fennel and lemon oil. it's the definition of comfort food. It's bukka.

After all that nice food I'm still only 9st

Oh yeah, Robin Hood was good too

Chips n' Fish

Friday's my favourite day of the week. Not because I'm finishing work but because it's Fish n' Chip night.

George and Helen's near Harborne is the way forward. The fish is fresh everyday from Grimsby, the batter is dark and crisp, and the chips are a blond colour with a crisp outside and soft fluffy inside. They're not greasy and have a slight nutty flavour...Beautiful
