See the groundbreaking ‘Beijing Map Games’ exhibition of contemporary art and architecture at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery from 18 October to 4 January 2009. The show includes works by some of the most celebrated artists in the world today including Ai Weiwei – the artistic consultant for the Olympic Stadium and British born Hugo Tillman

Birmingham will be the first city in the world after Beijing to host this groundbreaking exhibition of contemporary art and architecture. The show explores the role of the map within the rapidly expanding urban metropolis of Beijing and combines works by both Chinese and international artists and architects including Wang Jianwei, Ma Qingyan and architects Mada Spam and English born David Cotterell.

Specially commissioned works include ‘They…’ a photographic work by Wang Jianwei and upload/download by Chen Shaoxing – a series of oil paintings based on iconic locations in Beijing

The exhibition will feature a work by Ai Weiwei - the artistic consultant for the design of the ‘Birds Nest’ Olympic Stadium and one of China’s most internationally celebrated contemporary artists.

There is a special one day symposium on contemporary Chinese art at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday 1 November featuring contributions from international curators and scholars.
It has been organised in collaboration with Birmingham City University’s Centre for Chinese Visual Art in collaboration with Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. Admission £5 (students free), booking essential on 0121 303 1966, or www.bmag.org.uk

During the autumn half-term holiday (27th – 31st October) there are lots of workshops to accompany the exhibition. From pandas to puppets and door hangers to dragons, there’s plenty to keep youngsters entertained from 11am – 4pm …. and they’re all free! Full details at www.bmag.org.uk
